Stories Behind the Art

Artwork and story

Two women stand beside a forest stream, their steady presence bringing the scene into focus. Our interpretation honours the strength and dignity of wāhine Māori, companionship, care and connection to the places that sustain us.

A closer look at the story

The full leaflet explores the image and its inspirations, with sources for further reading. The flowing facial patterns belong to this contemporary artwork and are not presented as a reproduction of a particular person’s moko or whakapapa. Tā moko is a living Māori practice with deep cultural meaning.

The artwork and visual readings are Aroha Artisan’s contemporary interpretation. The leaflet includes published sources for further learning about the traditions and communities connected to the story.
